...can anyone here confirm that the Raider has 1" or 1-1/4" bars?

Also, need to get some bars that come back closer to the rider due to short reach. Has anyone put new bars on yet?

Thanks for any help that you can provide.

Barons is coming out with a handlebar that should bend towards the rider and still use all the stock cables. Heard it from the man himself at Star days

If you want to keep the same look/style handlebars but need more pull back then the VTX 1800C bars are the way to go. They give 5" more pull back and are significantly more comfortable. I got some from a VTX forum, matched the holes from stock bars and drilled, no splicing wires plus there's approx 8 -10 extra inches under the tank. You will need new brake/clutch lines, so I went with SS + 3" and added a SS throttle cable. All the SS cables/lines added about an extra $300. to the cost. Got the bars for $50.

I believe it's a 1". Check out the YamahaMotorCycleForum.com, I think there is a section there with info about availabilty of other
handlebars. You also might want to check out www.pacificcoaststar.com.

Raider Handlebar Installation

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Riders beware. If you think you can just throw on a different style handle bars real easy like, you better think again.

I am in the process of installing the Baron's Starbars on my Raider. I cut the width down to 33", cut a slot in the middle for the wires to go through. That was quite a task.

I took the old bars off and mounted the Starbars. I wanted to determine how much I was going to have to extend the hydralic lines for the clutch and front brake. I thought I could just re-route the throttle cables and make them long enough. I am fixing to go on a trip so I am trying to hold down the costs. But I wanted the bars on for the trip. Now it looks like I'm gonna have to buy cables and hoses. That'll be another $250 probably.

I found 2 more issues.
1) The handlebars have treaded inserts for the nut that holds on the handle
bar grips.
2) Also there is another sloted hole for the wires from the switches to go
through. Probably one on each side. I only have the right side off. I
thought this would just be a hole. Slots are a little difficult to
cut.

I'm a pretty good mechanic but I'm not a machinist. I do have a machinist friend. Guess I'll have to hit him up to assist.

This is getting to be a little too much for me. Why doesn't Yamaha make optional handle bars with slots for the wires and inserts for the grip nuts? I wonder if handle bars off other Yamaha models might work? I just wanted a little more pullback.

Ya'll got any ideas?

would you mind giving a few pointers? Did you remove the tank to install? Did the cables need to be re-routed? What holes had to be drilled?

Also, let me know where you got the cables, etc and if you have any part numbers that would be great.

I bought the VTX 1800 bars.

Please e-mail if that's easier jrhorton@lycos.com

You have to remove the tank in order to get to the wiring connectors that are routed through the bars. You can keep the fuel lines connected and just turn the tank around and lay it where the seat goes. The holes needing to be drilled are the holes for the wiring since all switch wiring is routed internally in the bars. Once you remove the top of the risers and inside riser covers and your bars are loose, then you will see what holes I'm referring to. I got my hydraulics from www.phatperformanceparts.com but there are many other places on the web that carry these lines. You may want to get a friend who has some repair/mod experience to help you if you've never done any repairs/mods before and a service manual. Good luck!

Well I have put broom stick drag bars on my bike. Since I do not have a shop anymore I took the bars down to a machinist I know that milled the slotted holes. The bars were dimpled so the slots went right were the dimples were. The one in the center was easy enough too. The wiring on the other hand was easier then I made it out to be. The hardest part was taking the switches apart. Once the switches were all apart I cut all the wires for all the switches (left about 1/4 inch of wire for colors). My girlfriend then helped me take the old wire off the switches and solder the wire back on after running them through the bars. The whole thing took about 1 1/2 hours to do.

Oh yeah and the bars are 1". Any Harley bar will work and there are plenty of places to buy them from. If you want fit advise on where the bars are I can also tell you how to measure for the rise and width and pull back. Just send me a message.

They have a 5" rise with a slight back and down sweep for a natural wrist position. Way too much trouble for wire routing, but now that they're on I love 'em!
